Ankara took steps towards State Department and the American one Pentagon against the US defense agreement with Cyprus, which it considers, as it says, a threat to its strategic interests, according to what the SKAI international affairs analyst from Washington, Michalis Ignatiou, reports.

In particular, Turkey states that the defense agreement makes Cyprus an American base and accuses America of taking a position in favor of Nicosia, thereby endangering the Turkish Cypriots and Turkey itself.

As for the importance of the agreement to Washington, the Pentagon believes that its security Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean is of vital importance to the United States and Cyprus, the statement said.

It is noted that the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning the signing of a road map to strengthen bilateral defense cooperation between the United States and the Republic of Cyprus.

Ankara argues that “these steps by the US authorities to the detriment of the security of the Turkish Cypriot side, including the announcement last June of the start of a strategic dialogue with the Greek Cypriot administration, undermine the neutral position of the US vis-à-vis the island of Cyprus and make it difficult achieving a fair, lasting and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue”.

In the same mood and the Turkish Ministry of Defense, which also condemned the agreement.
