Search and rescue operations continue in Myanmar, according to the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper, which reports that more than 65,000 houses, roads and bridges have been destroyed. Large tracts of farmland have been flooded in the central part of the country, around the capital Naypyidaw, while landslides were reported in several mountainous areas.
The head of Myanmar’s junta, General Min Aung Laing, appealed for help from abroad on Saturday, although he had previously refused it on a similar occasion. In June 2023, it had suspended the permits of aid workers trying to help the nearly one million affected by Cyclone Moka. The United Nations then denounced the “incomprehensible” decision.
