“Floods caused walls of prisons to collapse” according to Nigerian Correctional Service spokesman
Devastating floods in northern Nigeria caused walls to collapse at a prison in Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria early last week, allowing 281 inmates to escape, prison authorities said today.
Seven of the escaped prisoners were recaptured in security operations, said Umar Abubakar, a spokesman for the Nigerian Correctional Service.
“Flooding has caused walls of prisons to collapse,” Abubakar said.
Operations to arrest the remaining fugitives are underway, he added.
Maiduguri, the regional capital of Borno State, experienced the worst flooding in 30 years early last week.
Thousands of homes were flooded after the Alaou Dam broke on the Ngada River, 20 kilometers south of Maiduguri. At least 30 people were killed and 400,000 displaced by the floods.
