The presidium of the French National Assembly accepted the motion of impeachment filed against French President Emmanuel Macron by Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s party, “Unruly France”.

The Assembly’s office approved the first step providing for a debate on the motion of censure with 12 votes in favor, 10 against.

The motion of censure refers to Emmanuel Macron’s refusal to appoint NFP candidate Lucie Castets as prime minister, which, according to the text of Insubordinate France, constitutes a “serious breach of the duty to respect the will” of the people, arguing that the alliance of the Left emerged as the first force in the parliamentary elections, with 193 seats.

The process was ratified in the National Assembly and sent to the legal committee.

This step is the first of a series of others in a process that is difficult to approve, Le Monde reports, as it would require the approval of two-thirds of the members of the Assembly and the Senate, which meet at the Supreme Court.

Now that the impeachment process has been declared admissible by the Assembly’s office, it is up to the legal committee to decide. If it endorses the proposal, the National Assembly would have to approve it by a two-thirds majority within fifteen days, a threshold that neither the LFI nor all the NFP parties reach on their own: approval would require mainly the support of the National Rally .

For her part, Marine Le Pen stated in her post that the impeachment process of the President of the Republic “has no chance of succeeding given the divisions of the left”.
