Tupperware Brands ( TUP.N ) – the company that brought Tupperware into our lives – filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. state of Delaware late on Tuesday, succumbing to mounting losses due to weak demand for the once-popular colorful food storage containers.

The company’s popularity began to grow in the US in the ’50s – with door-to-door demonstrations as women of the post-war generation held “Tupperware parties” in their homes to sell the plastic containers with airtight lids for their own income. and be financially independent.

In fact, according to Skynews, Tupperware was so popular that products of the historic company were also allegedly once used even by Queen Elizabeth.

Women’s outlet and fun

“In those days, the role of most women was defined in suburban society. Your husband went to work and you took care of the house and the children. “Once in a while, in the evening, you would leave the little ones in the care of their dad and go to a friend’s house for a Tupperware party,” Ann T. Anthony (1924-2018) told the AP in 1996, when she was 71 years old.

“It was fun. You could see up to 20 friends and acquaintances who had also escaped for a night. We played little games and took home little tappers as prizes,” Ann described.

In 1964, Tupperware also comes to Greece.

Even today, many have memories of the moms, grandmas, and aunts of the family throwing little afternoon show “parties” with their girlfriends and neighborhood ladies at their house.

For nearly its entire 80-year run, the company has relied heavily on direct sales from an army of amateur sellers, counting over 300,000 independent sellers by 2022.

However, its sales have declined in recent years as the company has struggled to place more of its products in retail stores and online sales platforms.

“Tupperware has historically relied on independent sales representatives to promote its products, but that strategy has failed to reach today’s consumers,” according to the company.

In Greece, the company maintained a factory, which operated since 1967 in Thebes. In March 2023, however, the multinational announced to its 150 employees its decision to go into lockout.
