Russian forces today attacked a nursing home in the city of Sumy, in northeastern Ukraine, announced the regional governor, Volodymyr Artyukh. The first report says that “one person was killed and nine were injured,” he told Ukrainian television.

The regional governor said that the nursing home accommodated 221 people, of which 87 faced mobility problems. In a video that was broadcast, the operation of removing the elderly with stretchers and wheelchairs can be seen.

In recent days, Russian forces have launched a barrage of attacks against vital infrastructure in the wider region – using missiles, guided bombs and drones. Since then there have been sporadic interruptions in the electricity and water supply of the area.

In early August, Ukrainian forces made a surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region – which borders Sumy – and still have dozens of communities under their control.
