The main topics of the meeting between the two presidents were the bilateral relations between Turkey and Iran as well as the Israeli attacks on the Palestinian Territories and Lebanon.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with his Iranian counterpart Massoud Pezeskian in New York, where the two presidents are on the sidelines of the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).
The meeting took place in the “Home of Turkey”, in the American megalopolis, where Tayyip ErdoÄŸan has settled and according to an announcement by the Directorate of Communication of the Turkish presidency, the dominant topics on the agenda of the two presidents were the bilateral relations between Turkey and Iran as well as the Israeli attacks in the Palestinian Territories and Lebanon.
In the announcement of the Turkish presidency, it is stated that “during the meeting, President ErdoÄŸan stated that the historical and cultural ties between Turkey and Iran have always reflected positively on the relations between the two countries and that in the new period, opportunities for cooperation will be exploited according to with the interests of the two countries and that he believes that relations will develop and be promoted in every field”.
President ErdoÄŸan stated that “it is important to take measures that serve peace in the face of Israel’s aggression that threatens peace and stability in the region, that the international community should raise its voice more based on International Law, diplomacy and human rights in order to end Israel’s violence in Palestine and Lebanon as soon as possible”
He also said that “Turkey continues to increase its efforts to provide humanitarian aid to civilians in the Palestinian territories, especially in Gaza, where Israeli massacres are taking place.”
Turkey’s relations with its neighbor Iran are characterized by regional competition, but also by a cooperation imposed by geopolitical conditions. Tehran opposes Ankara’s plans to create the so-called Zangezur Corridor, which will run along the Iranian border, inside the territory of Armenia, and will connect Turkey with Azerbaijan and the Turkic countries of Central Asia. Turkey, for its part, does not hide its annoyance at Iran’s close relations with the Kurdish faction of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan of Bafel Talabani, based in the city of Sulaymaniyah in Northern Iraq. The two countries, however, support Hamas in the Gaza war and have a common stance towards Israel. The two neighboring countries also have developed trade relations, the volume of which reaches 6 billion dollars.
