Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said today that he will impose 100 percent tariffs on all cars imported into the United States from Mexico if he wins the presidential election against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.

We will impose 100% tariffs on all cars coming through the Mexican border“, said o Trump in a speech in Savannah, Georgia.

The only way they can get rid of this tariff is to build a factory here in the US, with you working in it“, added the former president.

Trump also said he would offer a number of incentives to foreign companies to relocate to the US, including low taxes and minimal regulations. The incentives, he clarified, will only be offered to those companies that will move their factories to the US and hire American workers. “I want German car manufacturers to become American companies. I want them to build their factories here,” he said.

He then warned foreign companies: “If you don’t make your products here, you will have to pay tariffs, very high tariffs, when you ship your product to the US».

On Monday, Trump said he would impose 200 percent tariffs on imported products from the agricultural machinery chain John Deere if the company moves its production to Mexico, as it plans.

Preserving and creating manufacturing jobs by imposing high tariffs indiscriminately on friends and foes has become central to Trump’s economic agenda.

Although the former president himself and his allies say trade barriers are necessary to protect American industry, economists say Trump’s proposals will spike inflation for consumers.

Trump also says he will create “special zones” on federal lands for foreign companies to locate there. It is not clear how this plan could work. If the land remains federally owned while foreign companies operate there, those companies would theoretically be exempt from property tax.
