Israel’s military says it has hit more than 2,000 targets in three 24 hours – Photos of destroyed targets – Plan for up to four weeks’ ceasefire tabled by Western powers
Israeli forces are on the brink of a ground operation in Lebanon, with the situation now raising fears of an all-out war, threatening to plunge the wider Middle East region into chaos.
Major General Herchi Halevi, chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces, told soldiers to prepare for a possible invasion of Lebanon, where they would “go in, destroy Hezbollah and its infrastructure.”
“You hear the jets overhead; we are hitting all day,” General Herzi Halevi told troops on the border with Lebanon, according to an army statement. “This is both to prepare the ground for your possible entry and to continue to degrade Hezbollah.”
Israel has deployed additional troops and resources to the fight against Hezbollah as the battle between the two sides escalated rapidly last week. On Wednesday the Israel Defense Forces announced that it is enlisting two more reserve brigades for operational activities on the war’s northern front.
As it states in a statement, “this will allow the continuation of the battle against the terrorist organization Hezbollah, the defense of the State of Israel and the creation of the conditions that will allow the residents of northern Israel to return to their homes.”
And while Israel’s airstrikes continued for a third day, IDF spokesman Vice Admiral Daniel Hagari said more than 2,000 Hezbollah targets had been struck by the Israeli Air Force in Lebanon in the past three days.
“Today, we continued the attacks in Lebanon. Fighter jets hit hundreds of targets to destroy Hezbollah’s capabilities,” Haggari told a news conference.
In fact, regarding the operational field, the IDF released images of the targets that were hit in Lebanon.
According to the same source, these are houses in Lebanon before and after Israeli airstrikes in recent days, which reveal that Hezbollah was storing ammunition and rocket launchers in them.
Plan for a ceasefire
As Israel moves toward an all-out war with Hezbollah, the United States and allies are working to broker a short-term ceasefire between the two, hoping to prevent a wider war and restart negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. a US official said on Wednesday.
In this context, a plan has been tabled for a ceasefire of up to four weeks during which negotiations will be held on both Gaza and Lebanon.
During this time according to the plan, IDF forces will remain in Gaza but will not invade Lebanon. The plan is based on UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a ceasefire in the Middle East region and the removal of Hezbollah from Israel’s borders.
However, Israel, according to unnamed officials, says any negotiations will take place while operations are underway, but says it is ready to listen to proposals, stressing that the chances of an agreement being reached are slim.
