Thirteen African migrants were found dead off the coast of Sheba
Thirteen people, believed to be from sub-Saharan Africa, were found dead today off the eastern coast of Tunisia, a judicial source said.
The migrants were spotted by the coast guard off the towns of Sheba and Salaqta, said Farid Ben Ja, the spokesman for the Madia and Monastir district prosecutor’s office. All the victims were men.
Authorities are conducting an investigation to clarify the circumstances under which these people drowned, the spokesman added, without giving further details.
Tunisia is, along with Libya, one of the main points of departure for migrants from North Africa. These are people who come mainly from sub-Saharan African countries but also Tunisians who venture across the dangerous Mediterranean in the hope of reaching Europe.
More than 1,300 migrants drowned last year or are still missing in shipwrecks off the Tunisian coast, according to the non-governmental organization Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights.
In the last decade, a total of 30,309 migrants lost their lives in the Mediterranean. Since the beginning of 2024, the number of victims has reached 1,405, based on the latest figures from the International Organization for Migration.
