What’s in the new “package”

According to the announcements of the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the 66th consecutive package of military assistance from Washington, the main supporter of the Ukrainian armed forces, also includes:

  • air-to-ground ammunition,
  • ground-ground,
  • anti-tank weapons, e

  • demolition materials.

The cluster munitions consist of bomb carriers that can be launched from either ground or air platforms. The bombs are scattered over a wide area and often some do not explode, remaining threat for yearsas even for decades, with the victims to be often civilians post-war.

More than a hundred countries have banned the use of weapons of this type, including Germany. The first US shipment of such munitions to Ukraine took place last year and was labeled an escalation by Moscow.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine have signed the international convention banning them, which came into force in 2010.

US military aid to Ukraine since the war began on February 24, 2022 has reached $56 billion, according to the Pentagon.
