Oil and gas are the lifeblood of Iran’s economy and a major source of income for the Revolutionary Guard Corps
US President Joe Biden has left open the possibility of a US-backed Israeli attack on Iran’s oil facilities in response to Tuesday’s missile attack.
The question that arises is what will be the consequences of such a strike.
Oil and gas are the lifeblood of Iran’s economy and a major source of income for the Revolutionary Guard Corps. Hence, an obvious target for Israeli retaliation.
Iran’s main oil export terminal is one on Hark Island in the Persian Gulf, near the port of Bushehr.
During the eight-year Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s it was a frequent target of airstrikes by the Iraqi air force.
Israel has shown it has the ability to strike long-range targets after it twice bombed the Yemeni port of Hodeidah, 2,000 kilometers away, and also hit an Iranian radar site near Isfahan.
Bombing the Hark would be complicated as Israeli warplanes would either have to fly over the airspace of Arab states or fly around the coast of the Arabian Peninsula, requiring extensive refueling.
If Israel decided to attack Harq or any other Iranian oil facility, there would be consequences.
Oil prices will likely soar, at least in the short term, and Iran will then vow to strike back hard. And it is this last, unknown factor that forces the US into restraint.
