In the revelation that Israel requested an advanced missile defense system from the US several weeks ago, a US defense official and a source familiar with the ongoing talks revealed.

The revelation comes after the Pentagon announced on Sunday that they will deploy a THAAD anti-ballistic missile system to Israel with about 100 US troops to operate it. The US only has 7 THAAD systems in its inventory, according to the Congressional Research Service.

The US deployed a THAAD battery in the Middle East shortly after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, although the Pentagon is now refusing to say where the system will be located.

The official says Israel’s request to deploy THAAD came at least as far back as the Israeli strike that killed Hassan Nasrallah on September 27.

Nasrallah’s assassination came days before Iran launched more than 180 ballistic missiles in Israel on October 1st.
