Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should not “to override UN resolutionsFrench President Emmanuel Macron said today, according to people who participated in the cabinet, recalling that the state of Israel was “created” by a UN decision.

UN Security Council Resolution 1701 states that only the Lebanese army and its peacekeeping mission are allowed to deploy forces in southern Lebanon and establishes a ceasefire on both sides of the border.

Netanyahu claims that Hezbollah was using UNIFIL facilities and positions as cover to launch attacks on Israel. On Sunday, he called on UN chief Antonio Guterres to send the peacekeepers to safety “immediately”.

On Friday, the French president called it “absolutely unacceptable” that the blue-collar workers are being deliberately targeted by Israeli forces. On Saturday, he expressed “his great concern” about the intensification of Israeli strikes in Lebanon and their dramatic consequences for the civilian population, while at the same time asking Hezbollah to immediately stop attacks on Israel.
