The first civilians evacuated via the so-called humanitarian corridors from Sumy, 350 km northeast of Kiev, arrived “safely” in a central part of the country, the deputy secretary general of the Ukrainian presidency announced on Tuesday.

“Good news, the civilians have left Sumi. The first convoy of 22 buses arrived in (city) Poltava “, southeast of Kiev, Kirill Tymoshenko informed via Telegram.

“1,100 foreign students will continue by train to Lviv. “At the moment everyone is safe, they have been given food,” he continued.

A second convoy, consisting of 39 civilian buses, was on its way and “already on the outskirts” of the city, he continued. “These are children, women, the elderly, foreign students.” They can “stay in Poltava or continue to Lviv,” he wrote west.

“I am pleased that the work of the evacuation team at this stage has been very successful. “I thank the people of Sumy for fighting bravely against the enemy for 13 days,” he added.

The Ukrainian authorities announced that they organized a humanitarian corridor on Tuesday morning to evacuate civilians from Sumy, a city of more than 250,000 inhabitants near the Russian border, a theater of fierce fighting for days.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Irina Verestsuk, the Russian Ministry of Defense pledged in a letter to the Red Cross to respect the humanitarian corridor for the evacuation of civilians yesterday, ordering a ceasefire from 09:00 to 21:00 (local and hours of Greece).

At least 21 people, including two children, were killed Monday night in Russian airstrikes against the Sumi district, according to Ukrainian authorities.
