The fire broke out in a shoemaking workshop in the second wing of the prison, causing the death of five people “due to suffocation”.
At least five people were killed and more than ten injured due to a fire that broke out in a prison in the city of Huancayo in Peru, the country’s penitentiary service (INPE) announced Wednesday.
According to the information, the fire broke out around 9.30 on Tuesday night in a shoemaking workshop in the second wing of the prison, causing the death of five people “due to suffocation”.
About 30 firefighters were mobilized to put out the fire at the prison in Huancayo, while ambulances took injured people to a hospital.
The prison service emphasizes that safety protocol was followed for the transfer of prisoners on the second wing of the prison to a safe location during the fire operation.
The causes of the fire are being investigated. According to a report by the private TV station Exitosa, it is assumed that the fire was caused by a short circuit and that it spread rapidly due to the flammable materials in the laboratory.
