“Falled from the 3rd floor of a hotel” in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires – Vigil by fans outside the hotel – The circumstances of his death are being investigated
Worldwide sadness is being recorded for the death of Liam Payne British musician, Liam Payne, at the age of 31 in Argentina.
“Liam James Payne, songwriter and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel” in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires, a police statement said.
The police were called to the CasaSur hotel at 17:04 (local time, 23:04 Greek time). An ambulance arrived seven minutes later, but paramedics only pronounced Payne dead.
The exact circumstances under which the tragic incident occurred are being investigated.
La Nacion and Clarin newspapers say police were called to the hotel after reports of “a disturbance possibly under the influence of drugs and alcohol”.
Liam Payne rose to fame as a member of the pop group One Direction, along with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson. The band rose to fame after finishing third on the UK edition of the music competition ‘X Factor’ in 2010. One Direction disbanded in 2016 and the band members went their separate ways. In 2019 Payne released his only solo album.
He leaves behind a son from his relationship with Girls Aloud singer Cheryl.
On October 2, Liam Payne had attended a concert by Niall Horan who was also a member of the band, One Direction, in Buenos Aires, according to Billboard magazine.
Vigil of fans outside the hotel
Fans gathered outside the hotel to mourn the singer’s death.
He, and his former band One Direction, have many fans in South America.
In 2014, the band’s “Where We Are” tour began in South America. They played in Bogota, Lima, Santiago, Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro as well as two nights in Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires.
The tour was the highest-grossing and best-attended tour of 2014 – attracting millions of fans.
Many of the group’s fans grew up with Liam and the other band members.
Liam Payne became famous when he was only 16 and died at 31. Many of his fans who have been following him since then are estimated to be a similar age – making it even more shocking.
The UK Foreign Office in collaboration with the Authorities in Argentina
In a statement, the UK Foreign Office said: “We are in contact with local authorities regarding reports of the death of a British man in Argentina.”
