Georgian Dream said it would secure around 90 of the 150 seats in parliament, according to Russia’s RIA news agency – Pro-EU opposition coalition garners 38.28%
Georgia’s ruling Georgian Party won 53 percent of the vote in parliamentary elections held today, with 70 percent of polling stations counted, the Central Election Commission announced.
The coalition of the four pro-European opposition parties gathers 38.28%.
The participation reached 58.94%.
Georgian Dream said it would secure around 90 of the 150 seats in parliament, according to Russia’s RIA news agency.
However, opposition United National Movement leader Tina Bokutsava told Reuters earlier that the ruling Georgian Dream party had been defeated.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, without waiting for the official results to be announced, was quick to congratulate Georgia’s pro-Russian ruling party on its “overwhelming victory” in the election. “The people of Georgia know what is best for their country and today their voice was heard,” he said.
Immediately after the end of the process, there was chaos with the results of the exit polls as they gave completely different predictions: in one of them the ruling Georgian Dream party seemed to win comfortably, while two others predicted that the opposition would have a majority in the new parliament.
The Imedi TV channel, which supports the Georgian Dream, predicted a victory for the conservative party with a percentage of 56%. Pro-opposition channels Formula and Mtavari Arkhi said the pro-Western parties would, together, manage to control the 150-member parliament.
