The Georgian opposition refuses to recognize the results of Saturday’s parliamentary elections, which show a victory for the pro-Russian ruling Georgian Dream party with 70% of the votes counted.

Opposition leader Tina Bokutsava, head of the pro-European United National Movement, argued that the electoral commission “did billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili’s dirty work”.

Ivanishvili, 68, founder and honorary chairman of the pro-Russian ruling party, was quick to celebrate Georgian Dream’s victory in the election shortly after the polls closed.

The 41-year-old Bokutsava announced that an action plan of the opposition forces will be drawn up in the next few hours.

The pro-Western opposition coalition, the Coalition for Change, also said it did not recognize the results, calling them “stolen elections”. “This is a constitutional coup and an abuse of power,” said the head of the “Coalition for Change” Nikas Gvaramia at a press conference. Gwaramia alleged electoral fraud with the help of technology, but without substantiating his claim.

The turnout in yesterday’s parliamentary elections was 59%, up from 56% in the 2020 elections.
