The United States will not impose new restrictions on Ukraine’s use of American weapons if North Korea enters the war, the Pentagon said today, as NATO says North Korean troops have been deployed in Russia’s Kursk region. The deployment of North Korean forces may be a sign of how Russia hopes to offset its mounting battlefield losses and continue to make slow, steady gains in eastern Ukraine.
The Pentagon estimated last week that 3,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to eastern Russia for training, but today raised that number to 10,000.
“A portion of these troops have already moved closer to Ukraine, and we are increasingly concerned that Russia intends to use these troops in combat or to support combat operations against Ukrainian forces in Russia’s Kursk region near the border with Ukraine,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said. Ukraine’s military intelligence service announced Thursday that the first North Korean units were spotted in the Kursk border region, where Ukrainian troops have been operating since a major incursion in August.
However, the Pentagon refrained from confirming the presence of North Koreans in Kursk. “It’s possible they’re moving in that direction, but I don’t have more details yet,” Singh said.
