UK Undersecretary of Defense James Hippy has warned President Putin and the Russians that the West is watching what is happening on the Ukrainian front, commenting on the attack on Mariupol maternity hospital that “what you see on your television screens is a war crime.”
He stressed that the responsibility for war crimes lies not only with President Putin but also with those who commit them on the ground.
He added that the Western allies are gathering evidence to substantiate the accusation of war crimes.
“What Putin is doing is not a war between two armies. “It’s besieging a number of Ukrainian cities and waging war against Ukrainian civilians,” Hippie told Sky News.
In an interview with Times Radio, the Undersecretary also stressed that a war between the West and Russia it will not be like the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“The consequences of participating in the war would be the launch of cruise missiles and air strikes against the United Kingdom,” Mr Hippie said.
He also warned British troops not to go to the Ukrainian front to fight, as it was illegal.
He also said that whoever goes there should not have the impression that he will take some selfies and leave. “When you cross the border to fight, you are there for good,” said the British Undersecretary of Defense, commenting on the British military’s admission that some unjustifiably absent soldiers may have gone to Ukraine.
