NATO will work with whoever wins the US election and will do everything to stay united, the Alliance’s secretary general, Mark Rutte, pledged today.

“We will work with Kamala Harris, we will work with Donald Trump and we will ensure that the Alliance remains united,” Rutte said during a joint press conference in Berlin with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“I have no doubt, because this is in our interest and it is in the interest of the US,” the head of NATO emphasized.

According to him, the US will remain committed to NATO. “They know that if Putin succeeds in Ukraine, an emboldened Russia will then be on our eastern flank and a direct threat to NATO territory,” he said.

“That’s why they’re involved in Ukraine, that’s why they’re involved in NATO,” he added.

When he took office on October 1, Rutte — who had been prime minister of the Netherlands for 14 years — said he was not worried about the outcome of the US election.

“I know both candidates very well and I worked with Donald Trump for four years,” he said.
