At least 25 people died when the boat they were on was deliberately capsized by migrant smugglers in Comoros waters, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced today.

The IOM office in Comoros “is saddened to learn of the death of at least 25 people after their boat was deliberately overturned by traffickers off the coast of Comoros, between the islands of Anjouan and Mayotte, on the night of Friday to Saturday,” the statement said.

About 30 people were on board the boat – including seven women, two toddlers (aged 2 and 6) and two infants – according to the accounts of five survivors who were rescued by fishermen on Saturday morning.

Two other fatal wrecks have occurred in the past three months in the same area. In September, 12 people died trying to reach Mayotte by boat from Anjouan. A month earlier, in August, eight people died after a boat capsized.

Comoros, an island complex off the east coast of Africa, became independent in 1975 with the exception of Mayotte which decided to remain under French rule.
