IAEA: Russia and Ukraine did not provide guarantees for the safety of nuclear facilities

by

The foreign ministers of Russia and Ukraine have not given any guarantees to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about the protection of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities during their talks in Turkey yesterday, its director general Rafael Grock said.

Mr. Grossi met with Sergei Lavrov and Dmitry Kuleba, the heads of Russian and Ukrainian diplomacy, yesterday in Antalya.

However, he spoke of positive signs. “Ukraine and the Russian Federation want to work with us, they have agreed to work with us,” he said as he left Vienna airport on his return. He added that he hopes the talks will continue.

With several Ukrainian nuclear facilities occupied, damaged or endangered in the two weeks since the Russian invasion began, Rafael Grossi has called for urgent talks to be held to ensure security, .

Mr Grossi reiterated his concern over nuclear surveillance equipment at Chernobyl and Zaporizhia, where the IAEA has not had data for days. “What we have is actually a situation that is getting worse and worse,” he said.

The connections do not concern the operational safety of the facilities, but the verification that the use of nuclear materials is done for exclusively peaceful purposes, he clarified, characterizing as a problem that the IAEA does not receive a continuous flow of data for this.
