Borel reassured Ukraine today on the occasion of the first visit of a high-ranking European official to Kiev after Trump’s victory
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell today assured Ukraine of Brussels’ “undivided support”, on the occasion of the first visit of a high-ranking European official to Kiev since Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential elections.
“The clear aim of this visit is to express the European Union’s support for Ukraine – that support remains undivided,” Borrell, whose term ends next month, told reporters.
Donald Trump’s victory is causing concern in Ukraine and Europe, which fear it will end Washington’s vital military and financial support to Kiev in its fight against Russian encroachment.
During his campaign, Trump questioned maintaining that aid and said he could quickly strike a deal to end the war.
“No one knows exactly what the new administration will do,” Borrell said today, stressing that outgoing US President Joe Biden still has two months in office to make decisions.
“We need to do more and faster: more military support, more training capabilities, more money, faster deliveries and permission to hit the (Russian) enemy on military targets on its soil,” he added.
For months, Kiev has been asking its allies to allow it to hit Russia with long-range Western-supplied weapons. But the latter are refusing because of fears of a new military escalation.
But according to Borel, Russian President Vladimir Putin “does not want to negotiate and will not negotiate unless forced to.”
Today, welcoming Josep Borel, the head of Ukrainian diplomacy, Andriy Sibiga, reiterated that Kiev should not be forced to make concessions.
“Everyone needs to understand that appeasing the attacker will not work,” he said. “A true peace is needed, not an appeasement that will bring more war.”
Regarding Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential elections, Andriy Sibiga argued that such changes “always represent a hope and an opportunity, an opportunity to get closer to peace.”
He added that contacts have been established with the Republican group following the phone call on Wednesday between Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump.
Still according to Sibiga, work is being done to organize a possible new meeting between Trump and Zelensky.
