In Romania, US Vice President Kamala Harris for talks against the background of refugees

by

US Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Romania today to discuss for the growing refugee crisis in the region, a day after the failure of a ceasefire following talks between the Ukrainian Foreign Minister and his Russian counterpart.

Harris will have a meeting with her president Romania Klaus Johannes in Bucharest, on the second stop of her three-day tour of Eastern Europe.

Meanwhile, the United States, along with the G7 countries and the EU, will withdraw Russia from the status of the “most favored nation” in the World Trade Organization in an effort to pressure it to end its attack on Ukraine.

Harris had a meeting yesterday Thursday with Polish leaders and Ukrainian refugees in Warsaw and offered US support for calls for an international war crimes investigation against Russia.

Her visit to Poland was strained by US relations with Poland due to the US supply of fighter jets to Ukraine.

Polish President Andrei Duda has called for more help in housing and feeding Ukrainians fleeing the country, and said he had asked Harris to speed up the process for refugees seeking refuge in the United States and possibly relatives there.

About 143 million Ukrainians have taken refuge in Poland since the start of the Russian invasion on 24 February.

During the same period, more than 291,081 Ukrainians have taken refuge in Romania.

In all, more than 2.3 million people had fled Ukraine by yesterday, according to the United Nations, which had warned that up to 5 million people were likely to flee the country. In this case, it will be the biggest humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War II.

The US Senate approved yesterday bill to help Ukraine finance military supplies but also humanitarian aid.

Russia, which describes its actions in Ukraine as a “special operation” to disarm its neighbor and oust its neo-Nazi leadership, denies targeting civilians.
