Iran will pursue anything that secures its interest, government spokesman Fatemeh Mohajerani said today, when asked if direct talks could be held with the Trump administration.

“Anything that secures the interest and values of the revolution will be pursued by the government,” Mohajerani told a reporter, according to the Iranian Student News Agency, as reported by Reuters.

There is no word on whether Donald Trump or his team are planning any such talks as he prepares to return to the US presidency.

In 2018, during his first term, Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from the 2015 deal Iran reached with international powers over its nuclear program and reimposed sanctions that have hit the Iranian economy hard.

“Trump’s maximum pressure campaign has failed, even if some people have been burdened by it. Actions, not words, will be important, but we recommend that Trump consider the failure of his past policies,” he added. Mohajerani.

Indirect talks between Washington and Tehran to revive the deal had begun under the administration of US President Joe Biden, but stalled. Iran is still officially part of the deal but has backed away from commitments to abide by it due to the US reimposing sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
