A pill that dramatically helps people quit smoking is to be given to tens of thousands of smokers by England’s NHS public health system.

The active substance varenicline may be more effective than nicotine gum or patches and as effective as e-cigarettes, according to NHS England.

The pill will be taken on a daily basis, with the hope that it will eliminate both nicotine addiction and withdrawal symptoms.

It is believed to help more than 85,000 people a year and prevent up to 9,500 deaths over the next five years, according to a UCL study.

At the same time, it is estimated that it will save the NHS in England around half a billion pounds, money spent on treating smoking-related diseases.

NHS England chief executive Amanda Pritchard has called the generic pill a “game changer” in the fight against smoking.
