The security service arrested a Belarusian man suspected of arson in Gdansk
Poland’s secret services have arrested a Belarusian citizen suspected of involvement in acts of sabotage after he tried to set fire to a building in the city of Gdansk, the Internal Security Service (ABW) announced today.
Poland says its role as Ukraine’s supply hub has made it a prime target for spies trying to gather information about supporting Kiev’s war effort and engage in acts of sabotage.
In January and May of this year ABW arrested citizens of Poland, Ukraine and Belarus who were responsible for arson attacks on buildings in the cities of Gdansk, Gdynia and Marky and who were preparing similar attacks on buildings in the city of Wrocław.
“This is another arrest in the context of the investigation concerning the activities of an organized crime group at the request of foreign intelligence services, which involved acts of sabotage and mainly arson,” ABW said in its statement.
The prosecutor’s office charged the arrested Belarusian citizen with membership in an organized criminal group and committing acts of sabotage, diversion or terrorist crimes on behalf of a foreign secret service.
The court ordered his detention for three months.
In May, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland had arrested several people in connection with acts of sabotage carried out at the behest of Russian services. He said the incidents of crime included “beatings, arson and attempted arson”.
