A woman testified to the Ethics Committee of the US House that the former congressman Matt Gates, Trump’s pick for attorney general, paid her to do sex. She also testified that she saw him have sex with a 17-year-old girl at a party, her lawyer said.

Speaking to the Washington Post, Florida attorney Joel Leppard said his client saw Getz having sex with the minor at a drug-fueled party in July 2017 and that Getz did not know her age at the time, but later found out she was a minor. ABC News first broke the news.

That woman and another, also represented by Leppard, testified that they were paid by Getz to have sex with him and other people who attended these “sex parties.”

In fact, they were paid through the Venmo app or other apps.

Getz never pressured Leppard’s clients to use drugs at those parties, one of his clients testified, but said drug use was widespread and expected. When asked by members of the House committee whether Getz showed signs of taking drugs, the women said yes, according to the attorney’s account.

Getz’s nomination shocked a group of Senate Republicans, and several have raised doubts that he would have the 50 votes needed to be appointed to the job of attorney general.

Getz did not respond to WP’s request for comment, but has denied the allegations. A Trump spokesman said the president-elect still supports his choice. He noted that the Justice Department under Biden ended the investigation into Getz without charges.

Leppard called on the Ethics Committee to make its findings public.

Republicans will hold 53 seats in the Senate and cannot lose four or more votes on Goetz’s nomination, as it is unlikely that any Democrats will vote for him. More than four Republican senators have already raised questions about his nomination.

Getch, WP notes, spent the weekend calling several senators on the committee, saying he might defend himself at a hearing. Trump and members of his team also made exploratory calls, according to two people familiar with the conversations.
