Russian President Vladimir Putin Approves Russia’s Updated Nuclear DoctrineRussian news agency Tass reports, with the Kremlin reiterating that any attack on Russia by a non-nuclear state but involving a nuclear state would be considered a joint attack.

In particular, according to the publication, Putin signed the decree “the basic principles of state policy in the field of nuclear deterrence” with the relevant document published on the government website.

As Tass reports, the basic tenet of the doctrine is that nuclear weapons are a last resort to protect a country’s sovereignty. At the same time, due to the emergence of new military threats and risks, Russia had to clarify the parameters that allow the use of nuclear weapons, he adds.

In particular, expanded the category of states and military alliances subject to nuclear deterrence.

“The list of military threats for the neutralization of which such actions are necessary has been updated. An attack by any non-nuclear state, but with the participation or support of a nuclear-armed country, would be considered a joint attack against the Russian Federation. In addition, Russia’s nuclear response is foreseen in the event of a critical threat to its sovereignty even with conventional weapons, in the event of an attack on Belarus as a member state of the Union, in the event of a mass launch of military aircraft, cruise missiles, drones and other aircraft and of their passage through the Russian border”the publication concludes, referring to the decree signed by the Russian president.

Kremlin: Retaliation will be inevitable in the event of an attack against Russia or its allies

The Kremlin said the updated nuclear doctrine signed by Putin is a “very important text”. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov added that “Russia had to align its nuclear doctrine with the current situation. The goal is to make potential enemies understand that retaliation will be inevitable in the event of an attack against Russia or its allies. Russia has always viewed nuclear weapons as a deterrent, as an extreme measure.”

Continuing, Peskov emphasized that “Russia has always taken measures to minimize the nuclear threat.”

Commenting on reports that Ukraine may be using US ATACMS missile systems in the Kursk region, Peskov said the Russian military is monitoring the situation very closely.
