As part of the investigation, 36 other people are being prosecuted while the final police report was submitted to the Supreme Court today
Brazil’s Federal Police today recommended that the country’s far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro and former members of his government be prosecuted for attempting a coup to prevent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from taking power after the 2022 presidential election.
As part of the investigation, it is requested that 36 other persons be prosecuted. The final police report was submitted to the High Court today.
“The Federal Police today Thursday concluded the investigation into the existence of a criminal organization that acted in concert in 2022, in an attempt to keep the then president in power. The final report was sent to the Supreme Court with a request to prosecute 37 persons for the crimes of violent overthrow of the rule of law, coup d’état and criminal organization,” the statement said.
The Supreme Court will in turn send the report to the attorney general’s office who will decide whether or not there is a possibility of prosecuting the former president of the state.
The list of 37 suspects includes former Bolsonaro ministers such as Defense Minister Walter Braga Neto, who was also a 2022 vice-presidential candidate, former Justice Minister General Augusto Eleno and Alexander Ramagem, the former intelligence chief.
