Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today that he and his Turkish counterparts Hakan Fidan and Iranian Abbas Araghsi agreed at their meeting in Doha that “hostilities” in Syria should end immediately.

Lavrov said Moscow wanted dialogue between the Syrian government and the “legitimate opposition,” as he called it.

A little earlier, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghsi also made statements to journalists that “a political dialogue must begin between the Syrian government and the legitimate representatives of the opposition.”

Lavrov called the rebels of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham “terrorists”, although they themselves say they have changed their views. It is “unacceptable to allow terrorist groups” to control Syrian territories, he added.

When asked how he expects the situation in Syria to develop and what will happen to Russian bases in that country, Lavrov replied that he “cannot speculate.”

Commenting more generally on the situation in the Middle East, Lavrov also said that extremism will reproduce in the region if a Palestinian state is not created.
