CNN Analysis: Risk of Wider Conflict Deepens – War Becomes More Dangerous

by

One man started the brutal war in Ukraine and only one can end it: Vladimir Putin, according to an analysis by CNN.

The escalation of the Russian President’s violent attack at the weekend – given the rocket attack near NATO ground in Poland and the dropping of missiles and artillery on civilian areas affected by a deteriorating humanitarian crisis – suggests he is not ready for a ceasefire.

In fact, the war is becoming more dangerous and closer to spiraling out of control, as Moscow has told the United States that it would target Western arms shipments to Ukraine’s armed forces that have helped slow Russian advance.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned Sunday night that it was only a matter of time before Russian missiles landed on NATO soil, as he renewed his call for NATO to impose a no-fly zone.

While some comments from Ukrainian, Russian and American officials raised the possibility of progress in the negotiations between Kiev and Moscow, which are to be resumed today, Putin defied the call of French President Emanuel Macron and German Oglave Sage ceasefire.

The plight of Ukrainian civilians is only getting worse. An already horrific situation is deteriorating in the besieged city of Mariupol, where city officials say more than 2,000 civilians have lost their lives. There is no electricity, water or heat and people run out of food and water.

There are also reports of extensive damage in the cities of Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Dnipro, Chernihiv and Sumy, which are under relentless Russian bombing. And an American journalist and filmmaker, Brent Reno, was killed by Russian forces on Sunday, according to police in Kyiv, while another American journalist was injured. The exact circumstances of the attack have not yet been determined.

None of these developments suggest that war is approaching a point where ceasefire negotiations or peace talks are likely to succeed. And the dangers of a wider conflict seem to be deepening.
