Rescuers called off their search for victims last night, hours after a sixth body was found in the rubble.
Dutch police today announced the arrest of three people suspected of involvement in a powerful explosion that caused a fire in an apartment building in The Hague, killing at least six people.
A criminal investigation has been launched into the causes of Saturday’s explosion, which destroyed the apartment building and several neighboring buildings in a residential area in a suburb of The Hague.
Authorities also reported seizing several cars, suggesting that they do not rule out further arrests of suspects.
As they emphasized, they received information about a car that was seen speeding away from the scene after the explosion.
Police do not yet know the cause of the explosion, but the attorney general told reporters on Sunday that there were indications – which she did not elaborate – that it was a criminal act.
Gas network company Stedin told Dutch news agency ANP today that it has no indication that the explosion was caused by a gas leak.
Rescuers recovered six bodies from the ruins of the collapsed building. Four people are still hospitalized, two of them in serious condition. Three people killed were members of the same family: a man and a woman aged 45 and 41 respectively, and their 17-year-old daughter. An eight-year-old boy is the only survivor of this family. The other three victims were men aged 31, 44 and 63.
Almost 600,000 euros were collected to help the victims of the explosion.
