Russia appears to be packing up its military equipment at Khmeimim Air Base in Syria, according to satellite photos released by Maxarm, a technology company specializing in satellite systems.

The photos were taken today and show at least two Antonov AN-124s – one of the world’s largest transport aircraft – with their nose cones open.

Khmeimim Air Base is located in Lattakia Province.

“Two An-124 transports are on the runway – both with cones up and preparing to load equipment/cargo,” Maxar said. “Nearby, a Ka-52 attack helicopter is being dismantled and possibly being prepared for transport, and parts of an S-400 anti-aircraft system are also being prepared to be moved from where they were deployed to the air base,” he added.

Russia’s naval base in Tartus, the only port where it can repair and refuel its ships in the Mediterranean, “remains broadly unchanged” since December 10″ and images show “two frigates off Tartus,” it said. the Maxar.

Britain’s Channel 4 reported that a convoy of at least 150 Russian military vehicles was seen moving and it appears that a deal has been reached to allow the Russians to leave Syria in an orderly manner.

Russia’s defense ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

Russia has supported Syria since the early days of the Cold War and recognized its independence in 1944, when it was still trying to shake off French rule. The West considered Syria a “Soviet satellite” for many years.

The Kremlin has said its goal after the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad is to ensure the security of Russia’s military bases and diplomatic missions.
