Panic markets are causing shortages of basic products in German supermarkets

by

Lack of cooking oil, flour, yeast, but also basic items such as salt and pasta, is already observed in several German supermarkets, as many consumers, fearing a crisis with more permanent characteristics due to the war in Ukraine and rising energy prices , rush to procure larger quantities. Some supermarkets already apply restrictions.

“We believe that this war will increase prices even more,” Joachim Rukvid, president of the German Farmers’ Association, told the Augsburger Allgemeine. “Farmers are already suffering from high production costs.” “In the case of fertilizers, there are already the first signs of bottlenecks or failures, prices are still very high and, due to the increase in the price of gas, they will continue to increase,” he said, noting that these conditions directly affect prices and adequacy of flour and cereal products.

In 2021, according to EU data, Russia was the largest exporter of wheat in the world, while Ukraine was in fifth place. The war has now stalled exports, causing further market problems.

Government experts, however, do not think for the time being that significant food shortages should be expected. In the long run, however, as the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief points out, problems with the supply of products such as mustard, cereals and cooking oil are not ruled out.
