Electricity restored at Chernobyl nuclear power plant after Russian strike

by

The power supply of its nuclear power plant was restored Chernobyl Ukraine 24 television station, said the authorities had informed the International Atomic Energy Agency.

On Monday, the state-owned grid operator Ukrenergo said the Chernobyl plant was running on generators as Russian forces destroyed the power line, the Ukrainian grid operator said.

This comes three days after Ukraine told the UN nuclear watchdog that all contact with the plant had been lost.

The plant, where the worst nuclear accident in the world occurred in 1986, was seized by Russian forces last week after they invaded Ukraine.

Both power lines at the site were damaged when the Russians took over, effectively disconnecting it from the grid.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said basic safety at the site should not be affected because the volume of cooling water in the spent fuel system was large enough to continue to remove heat without the need for electricity.
