Azerbaijan Airlines Flight J2-8243 burst into flames as it attempted to make an emergency landing near Aktau, Kazakhstan
The Azerbaijan Airlines plane that crashed in Kazakhstan was diverted from its course due to fog, killing 38 people, the airline said.
In particular, the deputy prime minister of Kazakhstan raised the death toll to 38 according to the latest update. “The situation is not very good, 38 dead,” Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozubayev said, according to Russian news agency Interfax.
The Azerbaijan Airlines plane, with 67 people on board, was flying between Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, and Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, according to Azerbaijan Airlines.
Earlier the authorities spoke of 32 survivors of the plane crash.

The airline said the plane “made an emergency landing” about 3 kilometers from Aktau.
It took off from Azerbaijan’s capital Baku at 03:55 GMT on Wednesday and crashed at around 06:28, according to data from flight-tracking website Flightradar24.

Russian media reports said the plane collided with a flock of birds before crashing, but this has not been confirmed.
The airline said there were 62 passengers and 5 crew members on board, while 32 survivors were reported so far.

The passengers were mainly from Azerbaijan, but there were also some from Russia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
Azerbaijan Airlines announced that flights between Baku and the Russian cities of Grozny and Makhachkala are being canceled while the incident is investigated.
