More than 200,000 homes in Bosnia and Herzegovina were left without electricity for a second day on Wednesday after a snowstorm hit the country and caused widespread problems in several Balkan countries.

Mainly in northwestern and central Bosnia, towns and villages suffered continuous power outages, the country’s two electricity companies said.

The snow had stopped by Wednesday, but many roads remained blocked, cutting off access to towns and villages.

“Our teams are on site all the time, doing everything they can,” said Jelena Markovic, representative of distribution company Elektroprenos BiH. Most transmission lines were in hard-to-reach areas, he said.

In neighboring Croatia, emergency crews said they rescued 48 people trapped by snow in the central Lika region.

In Slovenia, authorities said strong winds and snow made it impossible for a rescue helicopter to reach a Hungarian hiker who has been stranded in the Alps since Sunday.

About 10,000 homes were also without power for most of Wednesday in western Serbia, according to the Tanjug news agency, although the problem was mostly restored by late today.
