Biden’s statement comes after Russia’s Christmas Day attack – The attack was intended to cut off the Ukrainian people’s access to heating and electricity, Biden said
President Joe Biden said on Wednesday he asked the US Defense Department to continue increasing arms deliveries to Ukraine after condemning Russia’s Christmas Day attack on some cities and its energy system.
“The purpose of this outrageous attack was to cut off the Ukrainian people’s access to heating and electricity during the winter and to compromise the security of the grid,” Biden said in a statement. It is noted that Republican President-elect Donald Trump will replace Democrat Biden on January 20 and has repeatedly criticized the delivery of arms to Ukraine.
The Biden administration earlier this month ordered an increase in arms deliveries to Ukraine shortly before the end of the US president’s term in a bid to bolster Kiev by 2025.
The move stands in stark contrast to that of the incoming Trump administration, with President-elect Donald Trump sharply criticizing the US decision to allow Ukraine to use US weapons to strike inside Russia.
Russia this morning launched more than 70 missiles and 100 drones into Ukraine targeting its energy system, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, condemning an “inhumane” Christmas Day attack by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
“Today (Russian President Vladimir) Putin deliberately chose Christmas to attack. What could be more inhumane? Over 70 missiles, including ballistic missiles, and over 100 attack drones,” Zelensky said in a post on the app. Telegram.
“More than 50 missiles” and some of the drones were shot down, but some strikes caused “power outages in many areas,” he added.
“The goal was our energy. They continue to fight for a blackout in Ukraine,” Zelensky noted.
This “Christmas scare was Putin’s response to those who spoke of a phony ‘Christmas ceasefire'” between Kiev and Moscow, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha said at the same time.
The attack left at least one person dead and 6 injured, according to authorities.
One of the missiles fired in today’s Russian attack crossed the airspace of Moldova and Romania, Sibiha also said. This “reminds that Russia is not only a threat to Ukraine,” noted the head of Ukrainian diplomacy in a post on the X social network.
Bucharest announced shortly afterwards that it had not detected a violation of its airspace by a Russian missile.
Since February 2022, when Russian forces invaded Ukraine, Russia has continuously bombarded its neighboring country’s power grid, plunging hundreds of thousands and even millions of people into darkness and cold, often in freezing temperatures.
