Steinmeier dissolves parliament – Christian Democrat Friedrich Merz looks set to succeed Olaf Scholz as German chancellor
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Friday dissolved the country’s lower house to pave the way for early elections on February 23 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s tripartite coalition collapsed.
Soltz lost a confidence vote in parliament earlier this month after Finance Minister Christian Lindner’s Lib Dems quit, leaving his government without a legislative majority.
Christian Democrat Friedrich Merz appears, according to opinion polls, to replace Soltz as chancellor, claiming the coalition government has imposed excessive regulations and stifled growth.
The conservatives have a lead of more than 10 points over the SPD in most opinion polls. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is slightly ahead of Solz’s party, while the Greens are in fourth place.
The main parties have refused to govern with the AfD, but its presence complicates parliamentary arithmetic, making unwieldy coalitions more likely.
