The World Health Organization announced late Friday that the last major hospital remaining in operation in the northern Gaza Strip was “out of service” following an Israeli military operation against Hamas militants.

“The raid (yesterday) morning on the Kamal Antoine hospital put out of service the last major health center in northern Gaza,” located in Beit Lahia, the WHO said via X.

“Initial information indicates a fire and the destruction of several key wings during the attack,” the Organization says

There are 60 paramedics and 25 critical patients in the hospital, including those on ventilators.

Other patients in moderate to serious condition were forcibly transferred to the Indonesian hospital, which however is also “not working”.

“The systematic dismantling of the health system in Gaza is a death sentence for tens of thousands of Palestinians who need health care. This horror must end and health care must be protected. Cease fire!” says the UN in its announcement.

The operation at Camal Antoine took place the day after the announcement by the director of the institution, Dr. Hussam Abu Shafiya, that five staff members were killed in Israeli shelling.

The Israeli army announced for its part that it launched an operation against Hamas fighters near the hospital. The Palestinian Islamist movement accused him of actually targeting the health facility.
