As the US began to develop such weapons, “it is clear that our moratorium is no longer practically sustainable,” said the Russian Foreign Minister
Russia will abandon a proposed moratorium on the development of short- and medium-range missiles as the United States began developing such weapons, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with the RIA news agency broadcast today.
“We assess the situation on the basis of an analysis of the destabilizing actions of the United States and NATO in the strategic sphere and, accordingly, the development of threats arising from them,” Lavrov said.
“Today it is clear that, for example, our moratorium on the development of short- and medium-range missiles is no longer practically sustainable and should be abandoned. The US arrogantly ignored the warnings of Russia and China and in practice moved to deploy weapons of this class in various regions of the world.”
Washington withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty in 2019. Russia has since said it will not develop such weapons on the condition that Washington does not.
