The American billionaire Elon Musk is trying to influence German elections scheduled for February 23, a German government spokesman said Monday after the Tesla owner endorsed the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in an article in Welt am Sonntag.

“It is indeed the case that Elon Musk is trying to influence the federal election,” with X posts and an opinion piece he wrote supporting the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) over the weekend, he said.

Musk was free to express his opinion, the spokesperson added. “Besides, freedom of opinion covers even the greatest stupidity,” he concluded.

Elon Musk believes he has the right to have his opinion weigh heavily on German political affairs because of the “significant investments” he has made in Germany. In his article he develops the post he published last week in X claiming that “only the AfD can save Germany”.

“The claim that the AfD is a far-right extremist force is patently false, given that Alice Weidel, the leader of the party, has a same-sex marriage from Sri Lanka! Does this remind you of Hitler? Come now!” Musk writes.
