Russia launches wave of 111 drones in Ukraine on New Year’s Day – Victim dies in Pechersk district
At least one person was killed and seven others were injured in Kiev today in an attack by Moscow’s military, which launched a wave of 111 drones on Ukraine on New Year’s Day.
This blow, on the first day of 2025, took place while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said yesterday, in his New Year’s wishes, that this year will be the year of negotiations, which should “put an end to the war ».
Its president of Russia Vladimir Putin had threatened, in late December, to strike central Kiev in response to the use of American and British long-range weapons on Russian territory.
“One person was killed after an enemy attack in Kiev. The number of injured is seven, including two pregnant women,” the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office said on Telegram today.
The victim died in the Pechersk district, in the historic center of the Ukrainian capital, where a fire broke out in an apartment building and in a building housing administrative services, according to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.
It was about the roof of the building of the National Bank of Ukraine, according to the same source, which is located at a distance of about 300 meters from the offices of the presidency.
As reported by the military administration of the city, the body of a woman was recovered from the wreckage of the apartment building.
“Even on New Year’s Eve, Russia only cares about how to hurt Ukraine,” the Ukrainian president reacted in a Telegram post.
The fire was sparked by drone debris shot down by air defenses, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, as AFP reporters heard several loud explosions in the city center this morning.
People were also injured in the Sviatosyn district, on the outskirts of Kiev, where cars and tram lines were burned, according to the mayor.
For its part, Ukraine’s air force announced that it shot down 63 of the 111 drones that Russia sent to Ukraine, notably Shahed attack drones and “other types of unmanned vehicles.”
