The two biggest fires burning the Los Angeles from the west and east remain out of control, despite the efforts of firefighters, local authorities said today.

The fire in the Pacific Palisades suburb, with its luxury celebrity villas, “is one of the worst natural disasters in the history” of Los Angeles, the city’s fire chief said. Christine Crowley.

However, the firefighters managed to contain the flames in Hollywood Hills.

Drone video shows the scale of the devastation:

The Palisades fire, between Santa Monica and Malibu on the city’s west side, and the Eaton fire to the east, near Pasadena, are already the most destructive in the city’s history. 7,000 acres have already burned and entire neighborhoods have been reduced to ashes.

At least five people were killed, thousands of buildings burned, and nearly 180,000 people were ordered to flee their homes. The death toll is likely to rise, Sheriff Robert Luna said at a news conference Thursday morning.

The Eaton fire has been contained, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Maroun said, but is still far from contained. The strong winds of the past few days have died down, meaning firefighters will now have critical aerial support.

“We’re in a much better position than we were on Tuesday and Wednesday,” Marrone said.

Authorities warned, however, that wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour would continue throughout the day. Crowley said residents should be prepared to leave if asked.

Firefighters, with the help of helicopters dropping water and retardant, were able to contain the Sunset Fire overnight, which had forced the evacuation of Hollywood and the Hollywood Hills. No buildings were burned in that area and the evacuation order has now been lifted.

Sunset was just one of five separate wildfires still burning in Los Angeles County after months of no rain. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the dangerous conditions in the area a “perfect storm”.

The two largest fires, Palisades and Eaton, form a “tongalia” around the city, so large that it is visible from space.
