Its unwavering support for its territorial integrity, national sovereignty and political independence Lebanon reaffirmed the United Nations Security Council citing key resolutions such as 1701 (2006), 1680 (2006) and 1559 (2004). This renewed commitment comes at a critical time as Lebanon faces political, institutional and regional challenges.

The Security Council in its statement welcomed his recent election Joseph Aoun as President of Lebanon and his appointment Nawaf Salam as Prime Minister.

“The Security Council underlines that the formation of a government is critical for Lebanon’s stability and resilience to withstand regional and internal challenges and encourages all parties in Lebanon to demonstrate unity to this end in order to ensure Lebanon’s ability to face the various challenges facing the country” stated in the statement.

Acknowledging the continued support of the international community, the Security Council encouraged the Lebanese authorities to work constructively to promote national stability and called on the political factions to join forces, creating an environment conducive to reform and progress. The Council stressed that “Lebanon’s stability is vital not only for the country but also for regional security and peace.”

At the same time, in their announcement, the member states of the Security Council expressed concerns about violations of the agreement on the cessation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon, which came into force on November 26, 2024, and condemned the reported violations, calling on the parties to strictly observe the terms of the agreement agreement. The Security Council reiterated the necessity full implementation of resolution 1701 (2006).

Council member states commended the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL) and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon UNIFIL for efforts to maintain peace at the border and called for enhanced cooperation between the parties to ensure their success.

“The Security Council reiterates its full support for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and underlines the critical role it plays in supporting regional stability and calls on all parties to respect the security of UNIFIL and other personnel and facilities of the United Nations and to ensure that the freedom of movement of UNIFIL in all its operations is fully respected and unimpeded. United Nations peacekeepers and facilities must never be targeted.” stated in the statement.

The international community was called upon to provide humanitarian and financial assistance to Lebanon, based on the UN principles of neutrality, impartiality and independence, in order to facilitate the safe return of displaced persons, support reconstruction efforts and strengthen Lebanese state institutions , especially the armed forces.

In its statement, the Security Council emphasized that “Lebanon’s stability is inextricably linked to regional peace”. He reiterated the need respect and implementation of the relevant resolutions of the Security Council, which they constitute cornerstone of Lebanon’s course towards recovery and asked for continuous vigilance and cooperation to ensure that the country’s challenges are met with effective solutions.
