Answering a journalist’s question, the US president denied he said he would previously withdraw troops from the country
US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a decision would be taken on US troops in Syria, but did not give further details. He denied that he had previously stated that he would withdraw troops from the country.
“I don’t know who said that. But we will decide for that, ” Trump told reporters in response to a question if he had said he would withdraw US troops from Syria.
“We are not involved in Syria. Syria has its own mess … They don’t need our participation »he added.
The United States recently increased their presence in Syria from 900 to about 2,000after a rebel coalition led by Islamist Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) overturned the Bashar al-Assad regime on December 8th. Explained the increase in numbers as temporary measure to prevent ISIS from gaining ground in the country.
The US forces in Syria are the main supporters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) under the leadership of the Kurds, who defeated ISIS in 2019 and finished a five -year -old “caliphate” of the group, two years after their defeat.
