Biden – Xi Jinping on Friday, following reports of Chinese aid to Russia

by

US President Joe Biden will hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday to discuss Russia’s war against Ukraine “and other issues of mutual interest,” the White House said.

The decision to communicate between the two leaders comes after US officials warned that China may have already decided to provide financial support to Russia during the war against Ukraine.

The national consultant US Secretary of Defense Jake Sullivan met earlier this week with his Chinese counterpart, Yang Jiechi, in an “intense seven-hour meeting” as described by CNN, to outline the US position against the Russian invasion.

A U.S. official familiar with the matter, quoted by the American network, said the Chinese had “already decided to provide financial and financial support” before the meeting in Rome. “The question is really whether they will go further,” they added.

Earlier on Thursday, a Chinese official criticized NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg for his comments that China had a duty as a member of the UN Security Council to help end the war in Ukraine.

Speaking after a meeting of NATO defense ministers on Wednesday, Stoltenberg called on China to “clearly condemn the invasion and not support Russia.”
